Biography

Contemporary and classical music pianist, performer and artistic researcher, Carolina Santiago develops her concert activity with projects as a soloist, and in chamber music and ensembles with an international trajectory. Her artistic profile is marked by a selection of unconventional repertoire, without renouncing her traditional classical background but also as an eclectic artist of current avant-garde music.

Carolina Santiago is pianist of the Barcelona Modern Ensemble and coordinator of the International Composition Course Barcelona Modern, collaborates with renowned ensembles from all over Europe as the Ensemble Linea (Strasbourg, France) and she works with her two chamber music projects Syntagma Piano Duo and Duo Ekriktiko. She has worked with composers such as Simon Steen-Andersen, Alberto Posadas, Francesco Filidei or J. M. López López, among others, and she has participated in festivals such as Festival Royaumont (France), New Orleans NienteForte Festival (USA), Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt in Germany, Svensk Musikvar Stockholm in Sweden, or Zyklus Nouvelles Aventures (Wiener Konzerthaus, Austria).

Carolina Santiago has also received many awards such as the Piano Córdoba Corhyund Prize, II Prize of the Piano Meeting Ourense Festival, scholarship from the Fundació Liceu, BPA Yamaha scholarship and three scholarships from the Association of Artists, Performers and Executants of Spain. Santiago has been taught by pianists such as Albert Attenelle, Josep Colom, Pilar Valero, Nicolas Hodges, Vesko Stambolov, Catherine Ordronneau, etcetera. In 2019 she published her first CD released by the AAMY. Currently, she dedicates all her artistic activity to perform concerts in venues around the world.

Carolina Santiago is studying her PhD in Artistic Research in Music at the University of Aveiro (Portugal) with Luca Chiantore researching about an unconventional performance of the Catalogue d’oiseaux by Messiaen. Beforehand, she studied the European Master in Contemporary Music CoPeCo (2020/22) in EMTA Tallinn, KMH Stockholm, CNSMD Lyon and HfMT Hamburg, working on electronics, improvisation and interdisciplinarity. Previously, she was graduated with an excellence grant in Masters and Bachelor degrees on classical piano at the Liceu Conservatory of Barcelona.

Some of her creative solo projects include Migrating to the origin – doctoral research and experimental interpretation of Messiaen’s Catalogue d’oiseaux – or PlayFULL – piano and electronics performance around the concept of play/game with collaborative compositions. Carolina Santiago’s work focuses on blurring the creativity boundaries between performer and composer, rethinking traditional hierarchies, and researching the musical performer as an embodied mind.
