Biography

Born in Yecla (Murcia, Spain, 1994), pianist Carolina Santiago plays classical and contemporary piano music. Today she combines her activity as concert pianist with her PhD studies on Artistic Research on Music at the University of Aveiro (Portugal) with Luca Chiantore, supported by the AIE’s scholarship.

She is graduated in Bachelor and Master Degree in Classical and Contemporary Music Performance at the Conservatori del Liceu (Barcelona) with Albert Attenelle. She has won many prizes such as the 2nd Prize at Piano Meeting Ourense 2018, the Corhyund Prize at the Piano Córdoba Competition, the Conservatori del Liceu’s scholarship for Master Degree 2017-2018, the AIE scholarship for the Manuel de Falla course (2016, Granada) with Galina Eguiazarova and in 2017 she was finalist at the Premis Extraordinaris del Conservatori del Liceu and she received the Yamaha scholarship awarded by the VI Barcelona Piano Academy to the best Spanish pianist.

In the field of contemporary music, she has given many concerts with new music and premieres as a soloist, with her group Syntagma Piano Duo and in an ensemble. She is the collaborative pianist at the Barcelona Modern Ensemble and she works as the coordinator of the Festival and International Composition Course Barcelona Modern. In 2018 she attended the course Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt 2018  with the pianist Nicolas Hodges and the compositor Brian Ferneyhough. She has played in festivals such as the Festival Mixtur 2017 (Barcelona), the Festival Barcelona Modern 2018 and the Liceu Sax Festival 2018 and she has specialized in contemporary piano with Ricardo Descalzo at his Workshop on Experimental Music for Piano.

Her passion for chamber music has led her to improve herself in that field with strings, winds, singers and piano groups and piano duets with Vesko Stambolov and Catherine Ordronneau. Today, Carolina Santiago performs with her professional group Syntagma Piano Duo, specialized on 20th and 21st centuries’ piano music with the pianist Francisco Martí, and she works as accompanist for many outstanding musicians.

She has received classes from great pianists like Josep Colom, Pilar Valero, Christopher Elton, Aquiles delle Vigne, Jacques Rouvier, M. Wladowski, Agatha Leimoni, Marta Gulyàs, Mark Knoop, Akiko Ebi, Alexander Kandelaki, etc.

In 2017 she was selected to participate at the competition and course Primavera Pianística (Brussels, Belgium), and it is to highlight her participation as soloist at the Barcelona Piano Academy 2017, the concert series Claustre de Sant Domènec (Festival Castell de Peralada, Girona), the Benidorm’s concert series Grandes Recitales and with the Athenea trio at the Fringe Festival (Torroella de Montgrí, Girona).

In 2019 she has released her first album for solo piano and four hands El piano, reflejo del alma, in the framework of the collection Aires de Yecla, 11th Volume, edited by the AAMY.

Carolina Santiago has played at some prestigious scenarios as the Parlament of Catalonia, Kasteel d’Ursell, Atélier Marcel Hastir, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona pavilion, Sagrada Familia, Museu Picasso, and so many auditoriums and concert halls all around Spain, Germany, Portugal and Belgium.
